A Very Random Book Haul
If you are a frequent visitor of my blog and YouTube channel, you’ll know that I only read non-fiction books in the categories of business, personal development, entrepreneurship, and marketing, with the odd biography thrown in for good measure.
However, I recently acquired a rather random stack of other non-fiction books.
Where did these books come from?
I somehow managed to stumble upon an online book sale. Unfortunately, the site concerned was going out of business, so they were selling off all their stock at ridiculously low prices.
Most of the books were priced at £1 or £2 (as opposed to the RRP of £15 or £20)
How could I resist?
So, any book that piqued my interest even in the slightest got added to my basked without much thought.
I figured that if the books turned out to be of no value to me, I could either donate them to charity or give them to a friend who might get more from them.
The books took a long time to arrive (8 weeks from me placing the order). By the time they were delivered, I had forgotten what books I had bought, so the box opening was a nice surprise.
Why am I talking about these books?
So, how come I’m spending time talking about these books when they don’t fall into my niche?
Well, some of the books did get quite a bit of interest from people when I posted pictures of them on my Instagram channel, maybe because these books are somewhat different from those that I usually feature.
My followers were asking a lot of questions, so I decided to create a video and a blog post to tell you all more about them.
But before getting into the books I must stress that, at the time of publishing this post, I haven’t read these books, so my thoughts here are purely based on first impressions. These are not book reviews.
With that all cleared up, let’s get going!
I initially thought that this book was about how to get a good night’s sleep. Since that is something I do personally struggle with, I thought that this book might be helpful.
However, a quick flick through the book reveals that it is nothing more than a collection of boring texts and images that will indeed send you to sleep!
And that’s the whole point of the book!
It’s meant to be “devoid of excitement” so that your mind switches off, and you go to sleep.
Although I don’t plan to read this book from cover to cover, I will keep it just in case I ever need to read about cat staring contests or learn how gravel became sand!
According to the front of the book, this is the “latest science on what to eat to prevent Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline.” In other words, what you need to eat to keep your brain healthy and functioning.
Although this looks like quite a big book, the first half contains all the science, i.e., what to eat, why that affects your brain in certain ways, etc. And the remainder of the book contains 80 recipes for you to try.
I am interested in this book, so this is one that I may read and review sometime in the future.
Now, although I do exercise regularly, I have no intention of doing a triathlon, and I don’t enjoy endurance sports. Which left me wondering why did I choose this book?!
The only reason I can think of is at the time of purchasing I was reading another book, “Finding Ultra” by Rich Roll, which is all about his triathlon adventures. Subconsciously, this may have lead me to buy a book about triathlons…?
Flicking through the book, I do think it looks really interesting. There are some good images, and it’s packed with information that would be extremely useful to anyone who is new to the sport.
So, although this book is probably of no use to me, I do have a friend who does compete in triathlons, and I will most likely gift the book to him.
This book is written by the six-time Olympic champion, Sir Chris Hoy.
The book is aimed mainly at road cycling (or those who are cycling for speed and performance), which is not something that I do. I do have a mountain bike, and I enjoy riding it for leisure and to exercise my dog, but I’m not interested in anything more than that. So, again, this book is not really of any particular interest to me.
That said, the book is well-laid out, packed with pictures and diagrams, and it’s really easy to follow too. It seems to cover everything you could possibly want to know and is broken down into three sections; technical, physical, and mental. So, this book would be brilliant for anyone who is interesting in learning more about this kind of sport.
Again, I will be gifting this book to a friend.
“64 Geeks” by Chas Newkey-Burden (Meet the brains who changed the world from Aristotle to Zuckerberg)
I really like this book! I think it’s really cool and quirky.
Basically, the book features 64 people who have been influential in the world through inventing or creating something. There’s a potted history of each featured “geek” that’s presented in a very interesting way that’s fun to read.
Some of the people featured in the book include Pythagoras, Aristotle, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Graham-Bell, Thomas Edison, Nicola Tesla, The Wright Brothers, Alan Turing, Stephen Hawking, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and many others.
I do really like this book, and I am going to keep it and add it to my collection.
As the title suggests, this book shows you how to do things, including how to jump really high, how to throw a pool party, how to cross a river, how to chase a tornado, how to play football, how to predict the weather, how to catch a drone, and how to take a selfie.
Now, these seem fairly uninteresting and boring until you get into the chapters, and you see that the author has used science to try to take each idea to the extreme.
This is a very fun book that comes alive through its illustrations, and it’s definitely a book that I am going to keep.
I added this book to my basket because I wanted to find out how somebody could write a whole book on walking!
Although I love walking and I do walk a lot with my dog, I know that I would struggle to say anything really interesting or captivating about the experience!
I did begin reading the book, but unfortunately, I didn’t get very far before I gave up. There was nothing to hold my interest or inspire me to keep reading! That said, the book might get more interesting, and I do agree that walking is great for your mind and body. But I don’t think that the subject of walking is suitable for a whole book.
I will be donating this book to my local charity shop.
