Make Your Bed by Admiral William H. McRaven
Make Your Bed – Background Information
The author, William H. McRaven, did not originally set out to write a book. Instead, he was invited to give a commencement speech at the University of Texas.
He speech was based on 10 life lessons that had helped him successfully complete his training to become a Navy SEAL as well as help him through the rest of his Naval career which spanned 37 years.
As with all good speeches, it ended up on YouTube and went viral. This lead to a lot of people contacting him wanting to know more about his 10 life lessons. To help give more background, McRaven decided to publish them in a book.
WARNING: If you are planning on buying the book then I advise you not to watch his speech in the following video. I believe that you will get much more value and understanding if you read the book first and then watch the video after. But, for your reference, I have paced the video below. (The book does also contain a full copy of his speech printed at the back.)
Make Your Bed – My Thoughts
When I was purchasing the book, I glanced my eyes over the reviews left on Amazon.
One thing I noticed was that some people were using the book as a bedtime story for their children. And even though this is a non-fiction self-help book I can totally see how it also works as a bedtime story – and a very valuable one at that!
Each of McRaven’s life lessons has its own chapter. Within that chapter, he elaborates more on what the life lessons mean and shares some of his own personal stories and situations that they have helped get him through.
I would definitely class this book as a quick read. The font is quite large and the spacing is very generous (another reason why it works well as a bedtime story).
I sat and read this book in one sitting and it was so interesting to go from page to page. There were times that I cried from some of the touching stories that the author shared from his service in the Navy.
It doesn’t matter what age you are, what walk of life you are from, what job you are in, whether you want to be in the navy, or you want to be a SEAL or you don’t, I still think that this book will be super valuable for you.
This book will not take a huge commitment of time to complete. But if you compare the time that you invest into reading this book compared with the value that you will get out of it, it’s a no-brainer – you have to read it!
