The Impact Equation by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith
What is The Impact Equation about?
The Impact Equation helps to teach you how to build a brand online.
In the introduction, the authors mention that they’re not interested in likes, followers or share counts, they’re more interested in teaching you how to build a connection with your audience.
The whole book is based on one equation which is:
IMPACT = C x ( R + E + A + T + E )
All together it spells the word ‘CREATE’ and each letter represents a different section in the book.
C = Contrast
R = Reach
E = Exposure
A = Articulation
T = Trust
E = Echo
My thoughts on The Impact Equation
I really want to love this book and give it a top review, sadly I feel as though I can’t.
It is packed full of valuable content but I dislike the way that it has been put together and handed to the reader.
Possibly because I feel as though it lacks actionable content. It doesn’t have a step-by-step guide or a set method to follow so you are at a loss as to what to do with the information that you are handed.
You would also assume that the authors went through the above equation in chronological order, starting with the C. But they don’t. Instead, they go through the equation in a completely different order and, honestly, it freaks me out and messes with my OCD a little bit.
It’s obvious by reading the book that Chris and Julien know their stuff. There is so much great content inside and lots of quality information.
Even though I want to give it top marks, I’m not going to be able to.
Yes, it’s easy to read and there are some nice quirky comments along the way to help keep you entertained, but the practicality of the book is where it’s lacking.
The authors have given us the theory of The Impact Equation, but in order for me to score this book a 10/10 I needed some easy-to-follow actionable advice.
