Beautiful: A Beautiful Girl. An Evil Man. One Inspiring True Story of Courage by Katie Piper
To give you a bit of background information, Katie Piper was the victim of an acid attack here in the UK.
Previously, she was an upcoming model and TV presenter until she started dating the wrong guy (which is a bit of an understatement) and he arranged for someone to throw acid in her face.
The book goes through the events leading up to the attack, the attack itself and then Katie’s road to recovery.
A change of opinion
This book is a TRUE STORY – it’s not been based on a true story and it’s not had any part of it fabricated or over-dramatized.
It’s a completely horrible thing to have to go through and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. So for that, I don’t want to give the book a bad review and I don’t want to say bad things about it – but I am here to give an honest review.
Therefore, I must admit that in the first 10 pages, the way that Katie came across was really not my cup of tea. She came across as very shallow, very vain, very self-obsessed, and it was not a nice picture.
Later in the book, Katie admits that previously her world did revolve around her looks – but she was a model and a TV presenter and that was how she made her income.
However, after reading the whole book, my opinion of Katie changed dramatically and I now see her as a very inspiring person.
Lessons for all of us
You might this that this is a strange book for me to read and review – and yes, it kind of is.
But this is a non-fiction book and the reason I read it is because it’s about someone who took something so awful and turned it around to make something so amazing.
If I put myself in Katie’s shoes and something like that happened to me, I think I would shut myself out from the entire world and I don’t think that I would want to help anyone because I would be holding onto the grudge of what happened to me.
It would be so easy for me to play the victim role and for me to blame anyone or anything for my shortcomings.
Katie did the complete opposite.
Because of what happened to her, she wanted to help more people and she went on to set up a charity. She has brought so much more light back to the world from such a dark place.
That, on its own, is very inspiring and anyone can take something away from that.
My overall thoughts
I don’t want to say that this book is a nice read because at times it is difficult to get through. You can’t believe that this event actually happened, and you want it to be a fictional story.
I wish this book didn’t exist, I wish the attack didn’t happen and that it was a fiction story. But I’m glad that Katie had the courage to share her story.
Pick up this book and give it a read, not only will it humble you, but it will inspire you.
